Espresso based coffee
New Zealand is best known for its espresso-based coffee. Overseas, you might simply ask for ‘a coffee’ but in New Zealand you tend to order a custom espresso-based coffee, for example a latte. You will find espresso coffee machines in most cafes and restaurants, and often in offices or homes.
Double shot is standard
Kiwis like their coffee strong and a double shot of espresso is the normal here. If you are used to milder strength coffee, you should let the barista know by asking for a single shot.
Smaller size
Again, due to the Kiwi preference for strong coffee, the volume of coffee served in New Zealand is typically smaller than overseas. If you prefer a larger size coffee, let your barista know.
Short black
Looking for an espresso shot? Ask for a short black. That is the Kiwi term for a small, strong coffee better known as an espresso overseas.
Long black
Looking for a strong, medium sized coffee? Try ordering a long black. Long blacks have a little less hot water than an americano or regular coffee overseas. Some places will serve you a short black with a small jug of hot water on the side so you can add hot water to your taste!
Flat white
A flat white is the staple of Kiwi coffee. It is a smooth and creamy coffee; similar to a latte but with less froth or foam on the top. We highly recommend trying a flat white as part of your New Zealand experience.
Ask where to find a good coffee
You won’t find too many big international coffee chains here, as Kiwis tend to support their favourite local coffee shop. Kiwis are coffee connoisseurs. When visiting a new town or city, ask around for where’s the best place to get a coffee. There is a strong coffee culture in New Zealand, so most Kiwis will be more than happy to share their favourite spots with you.
Bring a reusable cup
If you like a takeaway coffee but want to limit your environmental impact, use a reusable cup. You’ll commonly see many people giving a keep-cup, travel mug or reusable cup to their barista when ordering coffee. Many places will give you a small discount for bringing your own cup and some offer reusable cups of their own!
